For anyone familiar with the beautiful sights and colorful tourists of South Beach, another local comes to mind. Riding on his shiny candy-apple red bicycle, hair free flowing, and Metallica blasting from his ipod, Mike Hanlin, or as we all know him at Beach High, Coach Hanlin, is just another South Beacher like the rest of us.Growing up in the quiet state of West Virginia, Hanlin was raised in a large tight knit country home. Complete with aunts, uncles, cousins, and an older sister, Hanlin was brought up with the typical southern hospitality.Throughout High school he remained active in sports, including football, basketball, and baseball. “I was a good athlete, mostly because there was nothing else to do” And when graduation time came, Hanlin knew that the country life was no longer for him, and decided to take off and find his place in the world.Hanlin received a full scholarship to play football in college at Morehead Sate University. After his football days were up and he had received his Undergraduates degree, he was offered a Graduates Assistantship to coach football in North Carolina where he taught and earned his Masters degree.“It was thirteen years ago that I moved to Florida, and I have remained a South Beacher ever since” Before teaching at Beach High, Coach Hanlin was a Physical Education teacher at Sunset High and Barbara Goleman High School.“It was actually Coach Divita that brought me to Beach High” Hanlin recalled when asked how he ended up here. Turns out, Coach Divita, the ex-football Coach/ Drivers ed. Teacher/ Coach Sims partner in crime was a good friend of Hanlin’s back in West Virginia.Both natives of the small state, and both football coaches, they saw much of each other and developed a friendship. While they both went off in there own directions, thirteen years ago they met again and that’s how it all began.While Hanlin is best known for his quiet stern behavior as Beach Highs CSI (Center for Special Instruction) or as Mr. Simon calls it, the Center for Stupid Idiots; outside of work Hanlin is a lover of the beach, Lincoln road, and Ocean Drive.“I’m always outside cruising the sights, you know the usual spots” he reviled with a childish grin. Hanlin is most proud of his dedication and love for South Beach; “I love seeing the changes of South Beach. I love and always will love living in such a vibrant, alive, city.” When asked about past times, and hobbies Hanlin simply laughed and took a momentary pause for dramatic affect. “The thing about living here is..” he began as his country accent began to sneak in, “all you need for complete relaxation and comfort, is to go in your backyard, the beach is my comfort zone.”Little would we know that the gentle giant that presides over our schools trouble makers is just another chilled out, tree-hugging, south beach bike rider. Perhaps next time one of us is read the “Two rules while being here in CSI”, we will take a moment to respect Hanlin, the hippy behind CSI. Word Count- 521

HANLIN: The man behind CSI

Growing up in the quiet state of West Virginia, Hanlin was raised in a large tight knit country home. Complete with aunts, uncles, cousins, and an older sister, Hanlin was brought up with the typical southern hospitality.

what im working on

Im really trying to push this whole “Profile” section in the news paper.

I have talked to students and most have agreed that they would like to learn more about the people who are teaching them.

I have made attempts to interview Coach Hanlin, and the guy with the accent however, they are harder to reach. For my first interview I spoke with Camarotti, just because hes not one to send away a reporter.

However, I have confirmation from many other teachers that I can expect an interview.

15- year old girl dies on fake Ecstasy

While we have grown from swingers and hippies peddling in the 60’s drug era, it seems that we have entered a new era of prescription drugs. On Friday, November 2^nd 15 year old Stephanie Arias purchased what she thought was ecstasy pills from a U-Gas station in Hialeah. According to friends that were with her, Arias popped the pill with orange juice and within minutes began to show evidence that something was wrong. Within fifteen minutes Arias was complaining that she did not feel well and stated “Oh, my God, I feel sick, I want to kill this roll” Police have revealed that Arias and two friends purchased the fake ecstasy for $14 each from 22-year old Christopher Rodriguez. According to witnesses the victim began scratching herself repetitively and expressing irrational behavior. Her friends decided to take her to a nearby Walgreens and began to pour Strawberry milk down her throat in an effort to get her to throw up. Without success, the friends then drove Arias to Mount Sinai Medical Center on 41^st street claiming to have found the stranger at the beach, and later left her there. While she was revived and attached to life support, it soon revealed that she was brain-dead and five days later her parents agreed to pull the plug. Based on urine and blood tests, traces of ecstasy and cyanide; commonly known as rat poison were found in Arias. Later that day, one of the friends returned to the hospital coming clean with what had really happened and cooperated with police giving detectives Rodriguez’s phone number. The man was later caught and booked into Miami-Dade County Jail on Sunday, charged with first degree murder. Rodriguez was denied bail Monday afternoon and is awaiting sentencing.

*It is ingested.

*Some common names are: “MDMA”, “Ecstasy”, “Adam”, “XTC” and “E”.

*The prices range from: $10-25 depending on the roll.

* Ecstasy is illegal in all countries around the world.

* MDMA can can be traced to have come from essential oils in the sassafras tree.

*Rolling balls or Rolling face is estasy drug slang

*Techno music and raving comes with esctasy to further “blow up” the roll

*All rolls are lined with other drugs such as cocaine herione and crack. So you truly never know what you are taking.

Golf team makes Regionals

On October 22^nd the Miami Beach Senior High golf team advanced to Regional’s where they placed 4^th out of 10 schools. After taking the back burner in recent years Beach Highs’ golf team is finally making progress, and now has titles to show for it.

Led by Coach Michael Perez; a Beach High veteran of 10 years, the golf team consists of thirteen members of both genders. Coach Perez inherited the golf team from Coach Soriano in 2002 and since then has gone threw numerous struggles. This is the first year the five player requirement has been met and topped with a souring thirteen players. “It’s hard work, but its fun!” 10^th grade player Aaron Groff revealed. “I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t enjoy it.”

Monday threw Thursday from 3:00 till 6:00pm, these students meet at the prestigious Miami Beach Golf Club, where they practice with the aide of golf professionals. “We would like to be district champs!” Coach Perez expressed when asked about the future; “[and] qualify for state!” Senior Player Patrick Brennan and Junior Daniel Peterson have been recognized as the top two players, promising a bright future for the golf team.

The reigning champions Miami Columbus High took 1^st in Regional’s, but with a 9 in 1 record, 2^nd place in Districts and 4^th in Regional’s, the Miami Beach Senior High golf team has ended its season on a promising foot. “Were all working hard to grow and make Beach High Proud” Coach Perez concluded. “Great work Players!”

Students Awarded for high PSAT score

Students Awarded for High PSAT score Ashlie Handy At Miami Beach Senior High School, students Caroline Kane and Claire Austin were recognized as commended students for high performance scores on the PSAT. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. In late September, more than two-thirds or about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on PSAT receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic score. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. Seniors Claire Austin and Caroline Kane were the awardees who brought great Hi-Tide pride to the school. Both girls are scholar’s academy students who maintain a GPA of roughly around 5.0 and are in the top 5% of the there class. “Honestly”, Claire Austin admits, “we could have done better and reached a higher achievement level, preferably with a cash award!” Although nothing in material value was awarded to the students, the recognition will weigh heavy in college applications, and looks great for colleges. Both students are highly involved in Beach High’s extracurricular activities such as the Debate team, Key club, Quill and Scroll; and hold titles as Co-captains of the school swim team. When asked for advice to give lowerclassmen taking the exam Claire Austin suggests “taking challenging classes and reading as often as possible.” To prepare for the test both students studied from the Official SAT test book and highly recommend the same for all test takers. “Unlike the SAT,” Claire Austin begins, “the PSAT is free, so take it often, study, and reap the benefits!”
