Last year’s Crown and Capers “jungle theme” was no comparison to the heart and soul put into this years Greece! An opening skit with Miami Beach High Staff member’s set the mood as Cobin made his entrance on his black and orange Harley Davidson Motorcycle; sweeping Dr. Sydnier (or, Sandy for the day) off her feet. Scene and costume changes kept the up-beat recreation of the 1950’s classic movie Greece both entertaining and refreshing. “I have to say; even Cobin stole my heart a little!” Senior Alexandra Kutner expressed on the skit. Even some of Beach Highs newest editions took part in the skit, including new Journalism teacher Mr.Weiss. Next up were the Sparkling Rubies, Miami Beach Highs very own dance team and auxiliary. With matching sparkling red and silver uniforms and shimmering pom-poms the girls showed off there best dance moves to a mix of Haitian urban music.  This is the first year that the Rubies have returned after a sketchy start.  Living up to their new and improved reputation, the Cheerleaders rocked to the styled of 50’s music while incorporating new stunts and tumbling.  Solo singer, Hailey Rodriguez showed her range with her version of Rock around the clock, by Bill Haley and the Comets. Half way through her amazing performance, a powering smile and slight gesture signals Beach High’s Cheerleaders to join on the fun; dancing and singing along side the soloist. Back to back stellar performances warmed the stage as the “Pink Ladies” hushed the crowd. Dancers Shay Santana, Annie Rusten, Dara Hirsh, Damarius blah, and Ashlie Handy did there dance incorporating jazz, modern; Ballet and hip-hop to the 50’s theme. All in all, this years Crown in Capers showed High Tide pride at its greatest; could this be a short lived high or only a preview of what is to come.

High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test; a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.4 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry requirements. In late September, more than two-thirds or about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
